What an AI conversion rate optimization agent does

Oct 4, 2026 · HI Engine Team

Most conversion rate optimization (CRO) tools show you data. An AI CRO agent acts on it: it finds what’s costing a store conversions, puts a price on each problem, writes the fix and tests it against the original. The merchant stays in charge of what goes live.

A dashboard reports. An agent acts.

Analytics, heatmaps and audits all end in the same place: someone has to read them, decide what matters and get a developer to change the theme. Every step is a handoff, and most findings never make it through. An agent closes that gap. It does the analysis, proposes a specific change, builds it and measures it, and it asks a person to approve before anything reaches shoppers.

The loop, step by step

The clearest way to judge an AI agent for conversion work is to follow one improvement through its loop. In HI Engine the loop has four stages.

One improvement through the loop: understood from evidence, sized, built on a draft theme for your approval, then tested against the original. Every result informs the next improvement.
  • Understand. HI combines store data from Shopify and GA4, shopping behavior from click maps and customer feedback from surveys to find where shoppers get stuck. Each finding is written in plain language.
  • Prioritize. Every opportunity comes with an estimated $/month range and a confidence level, and ideas are ranked by impact, effort and brand risk. Some come marked “we wouldn’t touch this.”
  • Build. HI Agent writes the theme code, runs Shopify Theme Check and publishes the change to its own draft theme, named after the task. You preview it in your own store, then approve it or ask for changes.
  • Test. The approved change runs as an A/B test, with visitors split 50/50 per browser. Winners stay, losers roll back, and the result goes into your store’s knowledge base.

What stays with you

An agent that changes a live store has to be safe to say yes to. Three things should never be automated away: the decision to publish, the store’s data and the way back.

  • Approval. Nothing goes live without your approval, and approved tests can be cancelled until they start.
  • Your data. Your theme, catalog and orders stay read-only until you ask for a change.
  • Undo. Every change is logged, and rollback is one click.

What it doesn’t do

HI Engine sticks to on-site conversion: no traffic, SEO or ads proposals. When it can’t verify an idea’s premise, or there’s no traffic baseline, it says so instead of producing a revenue estimate. A trustworthy agent is as clear about what it won’t claim as about what it will.

Where the agent works

An agent is only useful if its work reaches the people who decide. HI Engine works in Slack: each store gets its own channel, where every opportunity arrives with its monthly estimate and a review link, and you can ask HI about it in the thread.

An opportunity as it arrives in the store’s Slack channel: what HI found, why it matters and a link to review the change.

How to evaluate an AI conversion rate optimization agent

Before you let any agent near your theme, ask it to show you six things:

  • The fix, not a recommendation: does it write and publish the code, or hand you a to-do list?
  • A price on every finding: is each problem sized in money, with the reasoning shown?
  • A control: is every change tested against the original, or simply shipped?
  • A draft first: does each change wait on a draft theme until you approve it?
  • A way back: is every change logged, with one-click rollback?
  • Its limits: does it tell you when it can’t estimate something?

Those are the questions HI Engine was built around. It started inside a Shopify agency and rests on five years of conversion rate optimization work for Shopify stores.
